The “Symbol Series” broadly examines the innate desire to associate meaning through the use of symbols, and how suggestion and our personal experiences guide our interpretation of the world around us. A single symbol, a labyrinth of concentric interlocking rings, is centrally incorporated and is repeated as the core compositional element in all the paintings. Certain paintings in the series exclusively evaluate the symbol itself in formal explorations, making the interpretation of the symbols more ambiguous. The grouping of memento mori paintings, however, employ the symbol along with floral images/patterns and a human skull as a reflection on life’s journey and the recognition of mortality. These paintings embrace the emotive quality of symbols and their ability to lead us to conclusions around intent and meaning as well as analogous contemplation of our own lives.
