At its essence, the “Guideline Series” is about conformity (or rather non-conformity) while simultaneously exploring the intersection between graphic design and the painted image. The series stemmed from my inspiration and subsequent appropriation of digital content in my paintings and recent events regarding “fair use” guidelines and copyright laws (Consider #shepardfairey, #obamaposter, #andywarholprince, #supremecourt, #fairuse). The use of punk and alternative bands from my youth as subject matter originally came from a place of nostalgia. However, these references also suggest angst and/or rebellion that can result in new and innovative expressions… expressions that often deviate from established rules, norms, and societal acceptance. Compositionally I have tried to create a sense of spatial confinement. The guidelines depicted are references to those seen in the UIs of graphic design applications. They further compositional tension by fracturing the space and suggest creative restriction, as well as connote cross hairs or consequence for failure to comply.
