Over the past year I have had the good fortune of working in San Juan. Puerto Rico has held a special place in my heart ever since high school. I love the Puerto Rican people. I love the Puerto Rican culture. And in the past year, I have fallen in love with the murals of San Juan. Whether walking the streets of Old San Juan and La Perla, or commuting by foot on my approximately 1 mile trek from hotel in Condado to client site in Santurce, I have been struck by the quality, variety, and the artistry of the many murals. They are integral to new life being breathed in as part the city’s urban renewal efforts, but also seamlessly integrate with the detritus of decades of decay. San Juan murals transcend the decorative. They serve as a reflection of the resiliency, the spirit, and the character of the island and its inhabitants. They call out unabashedly, “Es lo que somos!”
